Outdoor Living Tour – Austin

This last saturday, my wife and I decided to go on the Austin Outdoor Living Tour to get some more ideas to take our backyard to the next level. Not only did we get so see 9 incredible different houses and gardens, but the tour led us through some fantastic neighborhoods we didn’t even know existed here in Austin. Overall we got tons of great ideas, lots of inspiration, and even met a few designers who were more than happy to share plant ideas and tips with us for free!

Some of the houses were HUGE – with 2 acre backyards as big as a theme park. But my favorite were the smaller, cottage garden houses. The ones with an eclectic mix of plants, and patio furniture, stuff that has been collected over a lifetime, and placed throughout the yard.

As we looked around, we saw tons of different things that we could do ourselves, and incorporate into our yard. Expect to see several DIY garden projects over the summer that were inspired by this last weekend.

Of course I brought my camera. Here are some of my favorite pictures. Do you see any inspiration in these yards? I hope so!

My favorite photo is the outdoor dining room. I really want to create one of those.

I love that bird feeder .. and it is the tiny details that make these spaces unique to each garden.
BUT .. I’ll be completely honest .. I hate the concept of dressing your garden area like it is another room in your house .. it isn’t .. it is nature and the outdoors .. people who “decorate” there gardens like that have no true connection to nature or they would respect it much more than treating like a room in the house .. I really really dislike that concept .. no one can be a true gardener and do THAT !
Now what did you think those plants were at my blog ? ;-)

what beautiful places! I definitely found inspiration from the wooden divider/carport and the horsegrass! We have a similar tour in Richmond every year but I never know when it is, and I always end up hearing about it afterwards. Thanks for sharing the great photos and ideas!

    Hi Eric,

This is my first visit to your blog but I’ll be back. I like the old doors being incorporated into the fence and trellis. Will be featuring our gardens once things start blooming.
