I just wish it would go a step farther and make the background completely white, not just faded and transparent.

It’s located exactly where you would find the RSS feed button on the right side of the smart address bar (where you type in URLs)

Wind Turbines cause Radar interference

Apparently a wind turbine “can look like a 747 on final approach” to a trained military radar analyst. And a field of 100 of them can cause a blackout zone, or appear as storm activity. My solution? build more, just not near any airports.

Read more in the NYT article.

And remember, one turbine (1.5 Megawatt, GE turbine–the normal ones used in a wind farm) will power 400 homes, or 4 large industrial plants, or 20 schools.

Modern Architects in Austin, Alterstudio

Last spring, while attending the Austin outdoor living tour, I had the honor of both meeting the architects and visiting a home of Alterstudio.

What’s so great about their designs?  The way they incorporate light, natural materials, and storage. And clean, clean lines everywhere.

I’ve never mined having a bathroom with tons of glass looking outside. Especially with a view like this. How about you?

This changed my life

Yesterday I rediscovered Swiss Miss via Twitter.  A recent Tweet, at the time, mentioned an interview between Dan Benjamin of the Pipeline and Tina.  So I tuned in.  And it changed my life.  You see, a couple of years ago Tina was fed up with all the planning and organizational tools. She, like all of us would get excited about using them but then abandon them due to complexity or downtime, or just because it has a bad interface.  She collaborated with her studio mate Cameron of Fictvie Kin (love the Easter Eggs) and came up with TeuxDeux.  It’s super minimal, white space driven, no clutter design approach to organizing what you need to do.

Hiding Cables

The "before" picture of a loose wire

The "before" picture of a loose wire

How hard is it to keep all your cables neatly organized in your office. Nearly impossible, right? Power cables, external hard drive hook-ups, USB cables to connect your camera and printer. The list goes on and on.
Tools needed for this project:

  • Hammer
  • Tape Measure

When re-working my office last week, I desperately tried to keep cord clutter to a minimum. There were some that I was able to manage quite well, but one in particular gave me quite a headache. When we moved in to Santa Cruz, I was in a hurry to get the internet connected, and the easiest way was to use a coaxial cable for my ATT Uverse connection. And the only port for the coaxial cable in my office was under the only window.

Windows are key. In any room. And I especially want lots of great natural light (and a good view) in my office. So I move all the furniture around to highlight the window from my desk. I’m still working on the perfect window treatment Hint: think shoji screen, but for now I am simply using the standard mini-blinds that have been there since the end of time.

Anyway, the internet comes into my office right below the window. And attached to the cable is a wireless router/modem, and a uninterruptible power supply to keep me connected even if we get a blackout. Two super ugly boxes with blinking lights. Not design friendly, and definitely not clean looking. So the first thing I did was find a place for them in the closet, hidden away, and then I found a coaxial cable just the right length to reach the boxes now hidden in the closet.

But the problem is coaxial cable is difficult to manage. It’s thick, and wiry, and never lays flat. And since it was coming out from the wall right next to my chair, I was always bumping into it, hooking my chair on it, and it was just getting in the way.

It was impossible to hide the cable without going into the attic and pulling the cable down the wall and creating a new drop box (which I’ll end up doing someday). Ideally, I’ll climb up in the attic, and wire it right. But for now it’s on my honey-do list.

But today I did a 5-minute fix that cleaned up the loose wire, and made a 100% improvement. During one of my monthly trips to Ikea I saw the Montera cable management kit. I think it was about $10 bucks, and so I picked a couple of them up. They are full of little cable management clips, straps, and holders. You can see a a bunch of them in the photos below. The kit is great for hiding TV cables, managing stereo cables, and general wire management.

All I did was take some of the white clips with pre-installed nails and used them to hold the coaxial cable flush against the baseboard and carpet. 5 clips, spaced 8 inches apart, and my job was done. you can see the before and after pics. Don’t you think the after is better? I do.

What do you do to manage your cables? Tell us your tips in the comments below.

Blogging room redux

So yesterday I posted how my office used to look. Over the last 24 hours I’ve simply moved things around a little to make some drastic changes. I spent absolutely zero dollars in this office makeover. I even used the same nails to re-hang the pictures.

There are three major elements to my office. The roll-top desk, which was my dad’s mom’s, the other desk with the black wrought iron legs (that has the computer) and that desk was my other grandmother’s, and the bookcase.

To start, I moved the roll top desk 90 degrees, from one wall to another. The desks used to be in an “L” shape (see previous post), but for me, that wasn’t the most efficient use of space, or the way I worked.

You see, I’m not a multi-tasker. I prefer to focus on a single task at a time. You won’t see me driving down the highway talking on the phone, drinking a skinny vanilla latte, while adjusting the GPS. I drive. And when I blog, I ignore the phone, emails, and even the dog, to focus on editing the photos, and writing the perfect words. So separating the desks was a natural choice for me. I have a computer desk, and I have a writing desk.

Once the roll top was moved out of the way, I took the bookcases and moved them to the opposing wall. And while I was at it, I re-arranged some of the Ikea storage boxes that are full of office supplies, client items, and personal photos. I think it looks 100% better all ready.

To top it all off, I moved the computer desk off the wall and into the room a bit. This way is much more appealing to me, and fits the flow of the room. Let me tell you, even though there are no drapes, rug, or additional seating, the room is beginning to feel done.

What do you think? I’d love to hear your impressions.

My Blogging Room

Two desks, one for writing, one for blogging

Two desks, one for writing, one for blogging

Today I learned about a great contest, one that I could only dream about.   And I’m preparing my entry.

Instead of spilling the beans straight away, and actually entering the contest (and showing you my entry in the process), I wanted to share with you what the before pics looks like.

This is going to be a Zero Dollar room make-over (that’s not the contest BTW). For the past year, I’ve been working every day in this spare bedroom.  Right after we bought Santa Cruz, we put in new hardwood floors, worked on the garden, and did all those house projects I’ve talked about so much on this blog. But one room was completely neglected.  My office.

I’ve done a lot of work in here. A LOT. And as you can see, it’s super functional. Clean, organized, inspirational and efficient. But there really isn’t any sense of style.
Don’t get me wrong, there are stylish things there, but none of them work together.
Take each of the desks, one came from each grandmother. The roll top was my dad’s side, and the iron leg desk was from my mom’s mom.
Then, look over at the bookshelves. Tons of great organized storage. I’ve used Ikea boxes, and shelves, combined with A6 size colored binders (which fit perfectly in the European shelves). Mixed in to everything are tons of personal items: gifts from clients, nick-nacks from my childhood, and keepsakes from our travels.

But the room looks like what it is.  A spare bedroom that has been used as an office.  So over the next day I’ll be moving stuff around, playing with some lighting, and adding a little bit more me to the space.  And I’m not going to spend a penny.  Come back tomorrow to see the result.
